Importance of Gudhi Padwa
Gudhipadva is beginning of new Hindu year. It is one of most auspicious days in Hindu calendar. This festival is celebrated with different names in various parts of India such as - Ugadi, pāḍavo, Yugadi, Samvatsaradi, Cheti Chand and Navreh. This festival has historical as well as natural importance. Many flowering plants and trees bloom at this time of year indicating the beginning of Spring season. On this day, God Brahma created time and the universe. On this same day, Shalivahan defeated the enemy and started the new ‘Shalivahan calendar’ in the 1st century. People celebrated this victory by hoisting ‘Brahmadhwaj’. This Brahmdhwaj itself has been popularly known as Gudhi or Gudi.
